The
Challenge
Rooted in neuro and cognitive sciences, the science of learning is complex and often not accessible to classroom teachers and instructional designers; however, this knowledge is vital for effective instruction and learning design.
My
Solution
I simplified the science into three main processes, scaffolded the concepts, and explained them using relatable analogies and vivid imagery. To assist learning, I used signalling to focus attention, cued prior knowledge, incorporated guided practices, and added knowledged checks with corrective feedback. I also used a multi-model format, presenting information via text, video, and audio.
Why
It Works
Scaffolding, analogies, and prior knowledge cueing help learners build mental schemas that connect new information with existing information. These schemas and their supporting neural connections are strengthend when learners retrieve information during guided practices and knowledge checks. Repeating key terms and concepts in in different modalities also strengthens the learners' neural connections that create deep learning.
